Elephant Sanctuary Brazil (Brazil)

Weather…

Elephant Sanctuary Brazil (SEB) is the first and only facility of its kind in Latin America dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of formerly captive elephants. It is located in the Chapada dos Guimarães region of Mato Grosso state on a vast property of approximately 1,100 hectares. Established in 2016, the sanctuary provides a place of healing and freedom for elephants that previously lived in circuses or zoos under poor conditions. The extensive landscapes allow the animals to rediscover their natural instincts, form social bonds, and move freely across diverse terrains. To protect the privacy and tranquility of the animals, the sanctuary is not open to public tourism. Instead, its work is funded through donations and educational programs conducted via social media. The institution collaborates closely with international experts from the Global Sanctuary Alliance to ensure the highest standards of elephant care.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The sanctuary is open year-round, but the dry season (May to September) provides clearer views and more active elephants. Rainy months may make trails muddy and less accessible.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are when elephants are most active, avoiding the midday heat. Plan your visit for these cooler periods for the best encounters.
📜
Etiquette
Never feed or touch the elephants - they are wild animals with specific dietary and social needs. Always keep a safe distance and avoid loud noises.
🎒
What to bring
A quality pair of binoculars allows you to observe elephants from a safe distance. Comfortable closed-toe shoes and sunscreen are recommended due to the open landscape.
🧭
Getting there
The Elephant Sanctuary Brazil is located in Chapada dos Veadeiros, accessible via a gravel road. From Alto Paraíso de Goiás, it is about a 30-minute drive.
🦌
What to expect
Elephants spend much of their time resting and feeding, so don't be disappointed if they are not immediately visible. Patient waiting at a good vantage point often rewards you with a sighting.
