Amazon Theatre
The Amazon Theatre (Teatro Amazonas) in Manaus is a world-renowned opera house and the ultimate symbol of the immense wealth accumulated during the rubber boom of the late 19th century. Inaugurated in 1896, it was built in the Belle Époque style to provide a venue for European cultural performances in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. To achieve its grandeur, nearly all construction materials were imported from Europe, including Carrara marble from Italy, cast iron from Scotland, and crystal chandeliers from France. The theater's most striking feature is its dome, adorned with 36,000 enameled ceramic tiles in the colors of the Brazilian flag. Inside, the auditorium seats approximately 700 people and features ceiling paintings created by Domenico de Angelis, depicting allegorical scenes. Following the collapse of the rubber trade, the theater experienced years of neglect but was meticulously restored in the 20th century. Today, it remains a fully functional opera house, hosting the annual Amazonas Opera Festival and serving as a testament to the region's historical global integration.
