Selebi-Phikwe Copper Mine (Botswana)

Weather…

The Selebi-Phikwe copper and nickel mine was for decades the primary economic engine of eastern Botswana. Operations began in 1972 under the management of BCL Limited, leading to the rapid expansion of the town and providing thousands of jobs. The industrial complex featured extensive underground shafts and a prominent smelting plant that processed ore for international markets. Following a downturn in commodity prices and rising production costs, the mine was placed under liquidation in 2016, marking the end of a significant era in the nation's mining history. Despite the closure, the site remains an imposing landmark of Botswana's industrial development. Current efforts by the Selebi-Phikwe Economic Development Unit (SPEDU) aim to revitalize the region by repurposing the existing infrastructure for new industrial sectors, including agriculture and manufacturing, ensuring the town's survival beyond its traditional mining roots.
