Kalahari Desert (Botswana)

Weather…

The Kalahari Desert is a massive sedimentary basin in Southern Africa, spanning approximately 900,000 square kilometers and covering most of Botswana. Although often referred to as a desert, geographically it is more of a semi-arid savanna, as vast areas are covered with grasses, shrubs, and acacia woodlands. The landscape is characterized by red sand dunes, which derive their distinctive color from iron oxide, as well as flat depressions known as pans that briefly fill with water after rainfall. The Kalahari is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife, including the famous black-maned lions, meerkats, and gemsbok, all adapted to extreme temperature fluctuations. Historically, the region is the ancestral home of the San people, who have survived as hunter-gatherers in this harsh environment for millennia, possessing deep ecological knowledge. Today, large portions of the Kalahari are protected by national parks such as the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, established in 1961, which remains one of the largest protected areas in the world. The geological formation of the Kalahari dates back to the end of the Mesozoic era and consists of a sand layer up to 300 meters thick.
