Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary (Bangladesh)

Weather…

Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary in Chittagong District was established in 1986 and is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in the country. Spanning 7,764 hectares, it primarily consists of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Geographically, the reserve is located in a hilly transition zone that serves as a critical migration corridor for Asian elephants traveling between Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar. The biodiversity is remarkable, featuring numerous tree species such as Garjan and Jam, alongside a wide array of mammals and birds. Despite challenges from illegal logging and agriculture, Chunati plays a central role in the regional environmental strategy. It was the first protected area in Bangladesh to introduce a community-based management model, actively involving the local population in forest protection. Researchers utilize the area extensively for studies on elephant ecology and forest regeneration potential.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The cooler and drier months of the winter season are typically the most comfortable for trekking through the diverse terrain of the Chittagong district. During this time, the trails are less muddy and leeches are less prevalent, making the search for wildlife much more pleasant.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk are the critical times when wild elephants and other animals are most likely to be moving along the forested corridors. Midday heat usually drives the larger mammals deep into the dense undergrowth, drastically reducing the chances of a clear sighting.
📜
Etiquette
Encountering wild elephants can be highly dangerous, so visitors must strictly follow the instructions of local guides and maintain a safe, respectful distance at all times. Making loud noises, using flash photography, or attempting to block their path is strictly prohibited.
🎒
What to bring
Durable hiking boots with excellent grip are essential for navigating the uneven and potentially slippery forest trails of the sanctuary. Because the environment can be humid and dense, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy trousers, and effective insect repellent are strongly advised.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is positioned along major regional highways in the Chittagong area, making it relatively accessible by local buses or hired vehicles. However, penetrating deeper into the core conservation zones usually requires hiring an experienced local guide from the nearby villages.
🦌
What to expect
Wild elephants roam across vast territories and dense vegetation can easily obscure them, meaning successful sightings require a combination of luck and immense patience. Enjoy the rich birdlife and the tranquility of the forest ecosystem while waiting for the larger mammals to appear.
