Maiden Tower (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Maiden Tower in the Old City of Baku, Icherisheher, is the most famous landmark of Azerbaijan and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The impressive structure reaches a height of 29.5 meters and was completed in its current form in the 12th century, though parts of the foundation may be much older. The tower has a unique cylindrical shape with a massive projection on the eastern side, whose exact historical function remains a subject of debate among experts. Inside, the tower is divided into eight levels, which were once connected by stone spiral staircases and now house a modern museum. Numerous legends surround its origins, with theories ranging from a Zoroastrian fire temple to an observatory or a purely defensive structure. From the observation deck on the roof, there is a wide-open panoramic view of the Caspian Sea and the modern skyline of Baku.
