Getting there

The Zambezi Valley is located in the remote eastern province of Moxico and is challenging to reach from the town of Luena. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is mandatory due to the lack of paved infrastructure and the presence of deep sand or mud tracks.

Travel is only recommended during the peak dry season from June to October when the tracks are reasonably passable. During the rainy season, large portions of the valley transform into massive wetlands, making vehicle travel impossible.

The relief is characterized by immense, flat floodplains and slow-moving water channels that offer vast horizons and a profound sense of isolation. The landscape remains very raw and untouched, with few signs of human settlements or modern intervention.

What to bring

High-strength insect repellent and waterproof footwear are essential for the often marshy terrain of the valley floor. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient, carrying ample supplies of water, food, and fuel to last the entire duration of the trip.

Parking options are extremely limited and confined to remote police outposts, small villages, or specific wilderness campsites. Most visitors park their vehicles in the open, directly at their chosen campsite, as there are no formal public parking facilities.

As this is one of the most remote regions in Angola, it is vital to travel in a group and carry emergency communication devices. Mobile coverage is non-existent, making thorough preparation and basic mechanical knowledge for off-road repairs essential.
