El Oued Palm Groves (Algeria)

Weather…

El Oued, famously known as the City of a Thousand Domes, features a unique agricultural system in the Souf region of the Sahara. The palm groves here are traditionally cultivated in deep, funnel-shaped excavations called Ghouts, which are dug to bring the palm roots directly into contact with the shallow water table. This technique allows date palms to flourish without the need for artificial irrigation systems in an otherwise hyper-arid desert environment. The region is a major producer of high-quality Deglet Nour dates, which are a significant export commodity for Algeria. In the shaded microclimate of the Ghouts, farmers also grow vegetables and fodder for local consumption. This landscape of thousands of green craters represents centuries of human ingenuity and adaptation to desert conditions. Today, while traditional methods persist, they are increasingly supplemented by modern agricultural technology to boost efficiency.
