Santa Rosa Fortress (Venezuela)

Weather…

The Santa Rosa de la Eminencia Fortress is a historical fortification in La Asunción, the capital of Margarita Island. Built between 1677 and 1682, the facility served to protect the city from the constant raids of French and English pirates. The fortress is located on a hill, offering a broad view over the Santa Lucía Valley and the access to the city. The site gained notoriety mainly during the War of Independence as the prison for Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, a heroine of Venezuelan history. She was detained there under harsh conditions while her husband, General Juan Bautista Arismendi, fought against Spanish troops. The architecture consists of thick stone walls, bastions, and a central weapons square. Today, the Castillo is a museum and a national monument documenting the history of the region and the resistance against colonial power. Visitors can see the dungeons, including the cell of Luisa Cáceres, as well as the cannon batteries.
