Port Townsend
Port Townsend is one of only three Victorian seaports in the United States officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The city experienced a building boom in the late 19th century in anticipation of becoming the terminus for the transcontinental railroad. When that failed to happen, its grand brick buildings and elegant hilltop mansions were preserved almost exactly as they were. Today, visitors can take a journey back in time through the well-preserved downtown and the nearby Fort Worden Historical State Park, which famously served as the filming location for 'An Officer and a Gentleman.' Maritime culture is at the heart of Port Townsend. The annual Wooden Boat Festival is the largest of its kind in North America, drawing sailing enthusiasts from around the globe. The surrounding environment, shaped by Puget Sound and the nearby Olympic National Park, makes the town a good base for outdoor activities. The local food scene emphasizes craft beers, organic produce from neighborhood farms, and fresh seafood, particularly local oysters. Port Townsend is accessible from Seattle via ferry or by car across the Hood Canal Bridge. The best time to visit is during the summer and early autumn when the weather is first-rate for sailing and hiking. The town is also a lively arts and music hub, hosting numerous festivals throughout the year within the historic grounds of Fort Worden.
