Freeland is located at the narrowest point of South Whidbey Island, providing access to both Holmes Harbor and the west side of the island. Originally founded as a utopian community, the town has evolved into the primary commercial hub of the island's southern end. Despite its growth, Freeland has maintained its rural charm and close connection to nature. The absolute highlight for visitors is Double Bluff County Park and the adjacent Double Bluff Beach. This beach is famous for its dramatic bluffs, vast driftwood fields, and the wide sandy flats that emerge at low tide. It is one of the best places on the island to enjoy views of Mount Rainier and the Seattle skyline in the distance. Holmes Harbor also provides calm waters for boaters and anglers. Getting to Freeland is easy via the ferry from Mukilteo to Clinton, followed by a short drive north. The town features an excellent selection of local shops, antique stores, and restaurants featuring products from Whidbey Island's many small farms. Nearby South Whidbey State Park complements the area with old-growth forests and more spectacular coastal scenery.
