Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach is widely regarded as one of the most characterful destinations on the Oregon Coast. The primary reason for a visit is undoubtedly Haystack Rock, a massive monolith rising from the Pacific that is accessible by foot during low tide. Here, nature enthusiasts can explore tide pools and observe puffins in the early summer. The vast sandy beach invites long walks, while Ecola State Park to the north provides dramatic vistas of the rugged coastline and historic lighthouses. The town itself exudes a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere. Cannon Beach is famous for its numerous art galleries exhibiting works by local artists. The architecture is characterized by cedar-shingled houses that blend harmoniously into the landscape. Local gastronomy focuses heavily on fresh seafood, with Dungeness crab and wild salmon being regional specialties. Cozy cafes and small craft breweries provide great spots to unwind after a day on the shore. The town is approximately a 90-minute drive from Portland via Highway 26. Since coastal weather can be unpredictable, late summer (August and September) is often the most stable time for a visit. However, the town also holds appeal in winter, when powerful storms lash the waves against the rocks, providing a dramatic backdrop for those enjoying the warmth of a fireplace indoors.
