Provincetown
Provincetown, affectionately known as 'P-town', sits at the extreme tip of Cape Cod, offering a unique blend of rugged natural beauty and a bohemian urban vibe. As one of America's oldest continuous art colonies, it has been a sanctuary for painters, writers, and free spirits for over a century. The town's lifeblood is Commercial Street, an animated thoroughfare lined with eclectic galleries, shops, and world-class eateries. The geography of Provincetown is truly dramatic, with much of its land designated as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The vast, shifting sand dunes are a sight to behold and are best explored via the famous 'Dune Shacks' tours or by cycling the Province Lands Trail. Beaches like Race Point and Herring Cove offer vast stretches of sand and some of the most spectacular sunsets on the East Coast. Historically, Provincetown holds a place of honor as the site where the Pilgrims first landed in 1620 and signed the Mayflower Compact. The granite Pilgrim Monument towers over the town, providing a physical reminder of this history and a challenging climb with rewarding views. Today, the town is celebrated for its inclusivity and remains a major hub for LGBTQ+ culture and arts festivals. Arriving by high-speed ferry from Boston is the most scenic way to visit, landing you right in the heart of town at MacMillan Pier. Once there, bicycles are the preferred mode of transport for reaching the dunes and hidden forest paths. While summer is the peak season for festivals and nightlife, the quiet of the spring and autumn months has a more contemplative experience of this coastal gem.
