Solvang
Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish immigrants and is located in California's scenic Santa Ynez Valley. The town is famous for its traditional Danish architecture, featuring half-timbered facades and several iconic windmills. Walking through its streets feels like stepping into a Scandinavian village, complete with a replica of Copenhagen's Little Mermaid statue and a museum dedicated to the famous author Hans Christian Andersen. In addition to its unique aesthetic, Solvang is renowned for its authentic Danish bakeries offering treats like Aebleskiver and butter cookies. Since the town is located in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country, there are dozens of wine tasting rooms where visitors can sample local vintages. Each September, the town celebrates 'Danish Days' with parades, music, and folk dancing. Solvang is easily accessible by car from Santa Barbara or Los Angeles, and its mild Mediterranean climate makes it a great year-round destination.
