Castle Williams

Castle Williams is a historic circular fortification located on the northwest point of Governors Island in New York Harbor. Constructed between 1807 and 1811, it was designed by and named after Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Williams, the first superintendent of the United States Military Academy. Built from red sandstone, it was a crucial component of the coastal defense system intended to protect New York City from naval attacks during the early 19th century.

Although it never fired a shot in combat, the fort served various military roles over its long history, most notably as a secure military prison during the Civil War and throughout the early 20th century. Its layered history provides a unique window into the evolution of American military infrastructure.

Today, Castle Williams is a prominent feature of the Governors Island National Monument, managed by the National Park Service. Visitors can explore the imposing structure, walk through its historic courtyard, and learn about the evolution of American coastal defenses. The upper tiers offer stunning, panoramic views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and the New York Harbor, making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts and casual explorers alike.
