Wardle is a pretty village situated in the foothills of the South Pennines, within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The settlement is steeped in industrial history, particularly related to the textile industry that once flourished in the valleys of the North of England. One of the most significant landmarks in the area is the Watergrove Reservoir, which was constructed in the 1930s to provide water for the growing population of Rochdale. The construction of the reservoir necessitated the submergence of a large part of the original village, including several woolen mills and numerous cottages, leaving a poignant legacy beneath the water. Today, Wardle is highly regarded for its proximity to nature, offering numerous hiking trails into the surrounding moorlands and hills. The village retains a strong community spirit, evidenced by its traditional brass band and local festivals, making it a sought-after residential location for those seeking a balance between urban accessibility and rural charm.
