Tewkesbury is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval market town in North Gloucestershire, positioned at the strategic confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon. The town's skyline is dominated by the massive Norman tower of Tewkesbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery that remains one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Britain. The town center is renowned for its high density of half-timbered buildings and its unique network of narrow pedestrian 'alleys', which have survived largely unchanged since the Middle Ages. Historically, Tewkesbury was the site of the Battle of Tewkesbury in May 1471, a decisive engagement in the Wars of the Roses that resulted in the death of Prince Edward of Westminster. Today, this legacy is commemorated each July with the Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, the largest event of its kind in Europe. Despite its historical charm, the town faces ongoing challenges from its riverside location, with significant flooding events recorded throughout its history. Nevertheless, Tewkesbury remains a thriving community with a strong sense of local pride, famous for its traditional markets, river cruises, and the historic 'Tewkesbury Mustard' which was even mentioned by Shakespeare.
