Skelmersdale lies in the heart of West Lancashire and began as a collection of coal mining villages. In the 1960s, however, the region was massively reshaped when it received 'New Town' status to alleviate housing shortages in Liverpool. Modern town planning placed great emphasis on segregated traffic routes and the integration of large green spaces between residential areas. While mining is long gone, modern manufacturing and logistics companies have established themselves in the industrial estates, providing structure to the local economy.
