💡 Tips
- Walk the pedestrian path of the Tamar Bridge for an incredible close-up view of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge.
- Parking near the waterfront can be challenging; look for car parks just off Fore Street and walk down the hill.
- Check the tide times before your waterside walk; the River Tamar looks its best at high tide.
- If driving deeper into Cornwall, use Saltash as your base to stock up on supplies before heading west.

Grab a traditional pasty from one of the local bakeries on Fore Street.
Enjoy scones with clotted cream and jam (remember: jam first in Cornwall!) at a riverside cafe.
Find a local chippy near the waterfront and eat while watching the boats.

Saltash, often described as the 'Gateway to Cornwall', is a spirited town perched on the west bank of the River Tamar, directly across from Plymouth. Its identity is defined by two iconic bridges: Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge, a masterpiece of railway engineering from 1859, and the adjacent Tamar road bridge. These structures provide a dramatic entrance into the county. The history of Saltash is deeply intertwined with the river. The waterside area, with its steep, narrow streets, retains the character of an old fishing town. Here you can find Mary Newman's Cottage, an Elizabethan house believed to have been the home of Sir Francis Drake's first wife. The town itself provides a mix of independent shops and cafes. For outdoor pursuits, the Churchtown Farm Community Nature Reserve and the nearby waterside paths provide wonderful opportunities for walks with impressive views of the river and bridges. Saltash also holds an annual regatta, celebrating its maritime culture. It serves as an excellent base for exploring both the maritime attractions of Plymouth and the rural beauty of south-east Cornwall.
