💡 Tips
- Park in the large car park at the top of the hill and walk down into the village. The streets are extremely narrow and steep, and driving in the centre is very difficult.
- Wear sturdy shoes. The cobblestone streets and steep inclines are not suitable for flip-flops.
- Check the schedule for the 'Fisherman's Friends'. In summer they often perform free concerts on the harbour (The Platt).
- Fans of the 'Doc Martin' TV show can take a walk to find the filming locations, like the Doc's house and surgery, or Bert Large's restaurant.
- Look out for 'Squeeze Belly Alley', one of the narrowest thoroughfares in England.
🍽 Food
Buy a crab sandwich from a shack on the harbour. The crab is often caught that same morning.
A must-have when in Cornwall. Find a local bakery to enjoy this hearty meal, well-suited for taking on a walk along the coast path.
Treat yourself to a scoop of creamy ice cream made with local cream. Excellent on a sunny day by the harbour.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Browse the small shops in the village for unique, locally-made pottery and crafts inspired by the coast.
Find CDs, books, and other souvenirs related to the village's famous sea shanty group.
Take the short walk over the hill to the tiny hamlet of Port Gaverne, a quiet cove with a pub.
Go down to the harbour at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive. You'll have the place almost to yourself with just the sound of the waves and gulls.
Walk up the coast path heading south from the village. After a short, steep climb, you'll find benches with an impressive, peaceful view back over the village and the coastline.

Port Isaac is one of Cornwall's most famous and best-preserved historic fishing villages. Dating back to the 14th century, it was once a busy port for the export of slate and coal. Today, it is renowned for its labyrinth of extremely narrow streets, including the famously tight 'Squeezy Belly Alley'. The village's whitewashed cottages with slate roofs cling to the steep cliffs, creating a dramatic and timeless coastal landscape. The village achieved international fame as the fictional 'Portwenn' in the TV series 'Doc Martin'. Fans can walk up the hill to see the doctor's surgery and other filming locations. Port Isaac is also the home of the 'Fisherman's Friends', a group of local sea shanty singers who found global success and still perform on the harbor 'Platt'. For hikers, the South West Coast Path provides dramatic walks towards Port Gaverne and the rugged cliffs of the north coast. Dining in Port Isaac is a highlight, particularly the seafood offerings at Michelin-starred chef Nathan Outlaw's establishments. Visitors are advised that the village center is pedestrian-only, with a main car park located at the top of the hill. The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of May-June or September. Access is via narrow country lanes from the A39 Atlantic Highway. The working harbor remains the focal point of the village, with a small fleet of crab and lobster boats still operating. At low tide, the sandy beach within the harbor walls is exposed, while at high tide, the Atlantic swells are kept at bay by the sturdy breakwaters. The village’s protected status ensures that its authentic character remains intact for future generations.
