Otley is a scenic market town in West Yorkshire, located in the lower Wharfedale valley. Its origins date back to the Anglo-Saxon period, and it was granted a market charter in 1222. The town's economy was historically dominated by wool and cattle trading. Otley is globally recognized as the birthplace of Thomas Chippendale, the most famous furniture maker of the Georgian era, born here in 1718. During the 19th century, the town became an industrial leader in the manufacture of printing presses, with the 'Wharfedale' press being a revolutionary local invention. Geographically, the town is overlooked by the Otley Chevin, a high ridge providing panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales. Otley remains an animated community, hosting thrice-weekly markets and numerous festivals, while its stone-built architecture and independent retailers maintain a strong traditional character.
