Newcastle-under-Lyme, often referred to simply as Newcastle, is a bustling market town in Staffordshire with its own distinct identity from the nearby city of Stoke-on-Trent. Its name derives from a 'new castle' built in the 12th century, though little trace of it remains today. The heart of the town is its large, open market square, one of the oldest and largest in England, which has been hosting markets for over 800 years. This area, surrounded by a mix of historic and modern architecture, is the town's commercial and social hub. Newcastle is renowned for its thriving cultural scene, centred around the New Vic Theatre, Europe's first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round. For a glimpse into local history, the Borough Museum and Art Gallery houses exhibitions on the town's heritage, including its past in the hatting and clock-making industries. The Queen's Gardens provide a welcome green oasis in the town centre. Newcastle-under-Lyme is a friendly and welcoming town with a strong community spirit and a rich cultural offering.
