New Edlington is a purpose-built industrial settlement in South Yorkshire, established at the turn of the 20th century to serve the burgeoning coal industry. While the original village of Edlington dates back centuries, 'New' Edlington was specifically constructed following the sinking of the Yorkshire Main Colliery shafts in 1911. The town was laid out in a grid pattern with red-brick terraced houses designed to accommodate thousands of miners and their families. At its peak, the colliery was one of the largest and most productive in the region. Since the pit's closure in 1985, the town has undergone significant social and economic regeneration. Today, New Edlington is a resilient residential community that benefits from its proximity to Doncaster and the A1(M) motorway, while maintaining a strong sense of identity rooted in its industrial heritage.
