Market Harborough is an elegant market town in the heart of Leicestershire, surrounded by easy on the eye countryside. The town exudes an upmarket charm, with an attractive mix of Georgian architecture, independent boutiques, and a bustling dining scene. The town's landmark is The Old Grammar School, a distinctive timber-framed building dating from 1614 which stands on oak pillars to allow a butter market to be held beneath it. A stroll through the town centre reveals historic alleyways like Adam and Eve Street and a wealth of listed buildings. St. Dionysius Parish Church, with its soaring 14th-century spire, dominates the skyline. Just a short drive or canal walk from the town are Foxton Locks, a spectacular staircase of ten canal locks on the Grand Union Canal. It's a fascinating place to watch the narrowboats navigate the locks, and the accompanying museum tells the story of Britain's waterways. The area around Market Harborough is also rich in history, with the nearby Naseby battlefield, a pivotal site in the English Civil War. Market Harborough gives a cultivated yet relaxed atmosphere, convenient for a country getaway.
