Killingworth, a town situated just north of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a fascinating product of Britain's 1960s 'New Town' movement. Designed as a planned community to address post-war housing needs, its layout is characterized by modernist architecture and a pedestrian-focused infrastructure. Despite its modern origins, the area has deep roots in industrial history. It was at Killingworth Colliery that railway pioneer George Stephenson developed his early steam locomotives, including the famous 'Killingworth Billy'. A monument and the preserved headgear of the High Pit shaft stand as reminders of this significant past. The town's commercial heart is the Killingworth Centre, which combines retail, a library, and a health centre under one roof. A key feature of the town's landscape is its large artificial lake, providing a scenic spot for walks and recreation. Its proximity to Newcastle provides excellent access to city amenities, while also being close to the countryside of Northumberland. Killingworth presents an interesting study in contrasts: a town of modern design built upon a rich foundation of industrial heritage.
