Irlam is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Salford in North West England, situated between Manchester and Warrington. The geography of the place is inseparable from the Manchester Ship Canal, which changed the economic landscape of the entire region forever at the end of the 19th century. Historically, Irlam was a rather rural settlement, but with industrialization, the town quickly transformed into a significant production center. The steel industry played a particularly large role here, shaping generations of inhabitants. Today, the focus has shifted from heavy industry to more modern service sectors and logistics. Irlam is closely connected to the economic hubs of Manchester and Liverpool through its well-developed road and rail network, making it a popular, albeit industrially-shaped, place of residence.
