Ickenham is a suburban settlement in the London Borough of Hillingdon, historically part of the county of Middlesex. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ticheham, indicating its ancient origins as a Saxon farmstead. The area is distinguished by its architectural heritage, most notably Swakeleys House, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion built in 1638 for Sir Edmund Wright. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Ickenham transitioned from an agricultural village to a desirable residential suburb, a shift accelerated by the arrival of the Metropolitan Railway. The village pond and the adjacent pump, dating back to 1866, serve as central landmarks of the old village core. The parish church of St. Giles, with its flint and stone construction, preserves medieval elements and reflects the long-standing ecclesiastical history of the parish. Today, Ickenham is highly valued for its conservation areas, excellent transport links via the Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines, and its strong sense of community. The local economy is primarily service-based, with many residents employed in the legal and financial sectors of central London.
