Houghton-le-Spring is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland in the county of Tyne and Wear, Northeast England. For a long time, the identity of the town was inseparably linked to the coal industry, as local coal mines shaped the economic base and everyday life of residents for generations. Since the closure of the collieries in the second half of the 20th century, Houghton-le-Spring has developed into a residential town with a strong community that looks back with pride at its industrial past. The townscape is determined by a mix of Victorian architecture and more modern development. The proximity to significant cities like Durham and Sunderland gives residents good economic connection opportunities. Despite the changes, the town preserves its traditions through local events and a bustling association structure that promotes social life in the region.
