Great Harwood is a market town with deep industrial roots, located in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire. Throughout the 19th century, it was a prominent center for the cotton textile industry, with numerous mills defining its skyline and economy. The town is most famously associated with John Mercer, a self-taught chemist born here, who patented the 'mercerization' process that gave cotton a lustrous, silk-like finish and increased its strength. The ornate Mercer Memorial Clock Tower stands in the town center as a testament to his legacy. Geographically, Great Harwood is situated on a plateau overlooking the Ribble and Calder valleys, providing a scenic backdrop to its red-brick Victorian streets. The town's agricultural traditions have been preserved through the Great Harwood Agricultural Show, one of the oldest and most respected events of its kind in Northern England, held annually since 1857. While the heavy industry has largely faded, Great Harwood has successfully transitioned into a popular residential area, retaining its distinct local character and a strong sense of community pride reflected in its local festivals and sporting clubs.
