Earl's Court is a prominent district in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in West London. Historically, it remained rural for a long time before being urbanized in the 19th century through railway expansion and massive residential development. The district achieved worldwide fame through the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, which opened in 1937 and for decades was the venue for international trade fairs, concerts, and sporting events until its closure in 2014 and subsequent demolition. The neighborhood's architecture is characterized by grand Victorian terraced houses and quiet garden squares such as Bramham Gardens. Earl's Court has a rich cultural history and was a center of the London music and LGBT scene in the 1960s and 70s. Famous residents such as Freddie Mercury lived here. Economically, the district is now an attractive residential location with a high density of hotels and restaurants. The demographic structure is extremely diverse, which is reflected in the international cuisine along Earls Court Road. Current urban development projects aim to transform the former exhibition site into a new residential and business district to further enhance the urban vitality of this historic part of London.
