Deeside is a powerhouse of Welsh industry, forming a continuous urban and industrial area along the banks of the River Dee in Flintshire, right on the border with England. Comprising settlements like Connah's Quay, Shotton, and Queensferry, it is the economic engine of North Wales. The region is internationally famous for the Airbus manufacturing plant at Broughton, where wings for the entire fleet of Airbus commercial aircraft are assembled using high-precision engineering. Deeside also has a rich history in steelmaking, with the Shotton steelworks remaining a major landmark and employer. The Deeside Industrial Park is recognized as one of the largest and most successful industrial estates in Europe, housing diverse sectors from automotive engine production to major retail distribution centers. Geographically, the area is defined by the flat, reclaimed lands of the Dee Estuary, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its importance for migratory birds. Amidst the industrial landscape, Wepre Park provides a large green space featuring the historic ruins of Ewloe Castle, a 13th-century Welsh native fortification.
