Clifton is located in the southern part of Nottingham, perched on the banks of the River Trent. It is uniquely composed of two distinct areas: the historic Clifton Village and the vast residential estate developed after the Second World War. Clifton Village is an easy on the eye conservation area featuring thatched cottages and the medieval St Mary's Church. Clifton Hall, a stately home dating back to the 11th century, overlooks the Trent and was the seat of the Clifton family for many centuries. The modern estate was built in the 1950s to alleviate Nottingham's housing shortage and was once considered the largest council housing project in Europe. Today, Clifton is home to a major campus of Nottingham Trent University, giving the area a significant student population. Connectivity to Nottingham city centre is excellent thanks to the Nottingham Express Transit tram system. Local economy is driven by the education sector and retail services. Numerous green spaces, such as the Flower Park, provide recreational areas for residents. Clifton Grove gives beautiful walks along the river cliffs with panoramic views over the Trent Valley. The area represents a fascinating mix of ancient village heritage and 20th-century urban planning.
