Chaddesden is a large residential suburb of Derby, England, with a history that stretches back to the Anglo-Saxon era. The name is thought to derive from 'Ceadda's Hill', indicating an early settlement on the rising ground above the Derwent valley. For centuries, Chaddesden was a quiet rural parish dominated by the Wilmot family, who resided at Chaddesden Hall. The dramatic transformation of the area occurred in the 1930s, when Derby Corporation undertook an ambitious housing program to accommodate the growing industrial workforce of the city. This era defined the current layout of Chaddesden, characterized by wide avenues and semi-detached homes typical of English garden suburbs. The 60-acre Chaddesden Park, once the private grounds of the Hall, now features extensive sports facilities, a library, and nature trails. The village core still retains a sense of antiquity, centered around the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church, which contains fine examples of medieval stonework and monuments to the local landed gentry, providing a poignant contrast to the surrounding 20th-century development.
