Bamburgh Castle (United Kingdom)

Weather…

Bamburgh Castle, perched dramatically on a massive basalt outcrop (the Whin Sill) on the Northumberland coast, is one of the largest and most iconic fortresses in England. Occupied since prehistoric times, it rose to prominence in the 6th century AD as the royal seat of the Kings of Northumbria, serving as the capital of a powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom. Its commanding position offered formidable defense against Viking raids and allowed control over North Sea trade routes. The current structure is dominated by the 12th-century Norman keep and extensive late 19th-century restorations funded by the Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, who saved the castle from ruin. Historically, Bamburgh is steeped in Arthurian legend and is often associated with Joyous Gard, the home of Sir Lancelot. During the Wars of the Roses, it achieved the dubious distinction of being the first English castle to fall to artillery fire. Today, the castle remains the private home of the Armstrong family but is open to the public, showcasing an exceptional collection of weaponry, fine art, and archaeological finds from its Anglo-Saxon past.
