The Pidlyska Hora Nature Reserve, often referred to as White Mountain (Bila Hora) or Mount Markiyan Shashkevych, is a breathtaking protected natural monument in the Lviv Oblast of Ukraine, near the historic town of Olesko. Rising to an elevation of approximately 372 meters, this prominent hill is celebrated for its unique steppe-like vegetation and diverse local flora, which transform the landscape with vibrant colors during the spring and summer months. Beyond its ecological significance, Pidlyska Hora holds a profound place in Ukrainian cultural history. At its summit stands a monumental cross, erected in 1911 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Markiyan Shashkevych, a prominent Ukrainian poet, folklorist, and national revival figure who was born in the nearby village of Pidlyssia. Visitors hiking the gentle trails to the top are rewarded not only with a close-up view of this historic memorial but also with sweeping, panoramic vistas of the surrounding Western Ukrainian countryside, offering a serene blend of natural beauty and historical reflection.
