Erzincan (Ergan)
Erzincan is situated in a vast plain in Eastern Anatolia and is a city that has reinvented itself as modern and spacious after major earthquakes. A main draw is Mount Ergan, which hosts one of Turkey's longest and most modern ski resorts. Overlooking the majestic Munzur Lake, the ski resort gives excellent conditions for both beginners and professionals in an impressive alpine setting. The nature around Erzincan is rugged and spectacular. The Girlevik Waterfalls are a must-see; in summer they provide cooling, and in winter they freeze into bizarre ice sculptures. The region is also a hub for outdoor sports such as rafting on the Karasu River (a tributary of the Euphrates) or paragliding. The wide plains and the surrounding high mountains make Erzincan a convenient destination for adventurers. Culturally, Erzincan is world-famous for its artistic copper handicraft. Visitors can watch the craftsmen at work in the bazaar. Culinary-wise, one must try 'Erzincan Tulum Peyniri', a spicy nomad cheese aged in goat skins. The local honey and the region's grapes also enjoy an excellent reputation. The city is easily accessible by plane via Erzincan Yıldırım Akbulut Airport. While winter is the best time for skiers, spring and summer provide good conditions for nature exploration and water sports.
