Anadoluhisarı

Anadoluhisarı

Anadoluhisarı, or the Anatolian Fortress, is a historic 14th-century fortification located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. Built between 1393 and 1394 by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, it served as a strategic military outpost during the Ottoman preparations for the conquest of Constantinople. The fortress was constructed at the narrowest point of the strait, directly opposite the later-built Rumelihisarı, to control maritime traffic and block naval support to the Byzantine Empire from the Black Sea.

Today, Anadoluhisarı stands as the oldest surviving Ottoman architectural structure in Istanbul. Though much smaller than its European counterpart, it offers a fascinating glimpse into early Ottoman military architecture. The site features a central watchtower and thick defensive walls, seamlessly blending into a picturesque, quiet residential neighborhood. The adjacent Göksu stream adds to the scenic beauty of the area, making it a peaceful retreat from the bustling city center.

Visitors can explore the surrounding historic wooden houses (yalı) and enjoy a quiet walk along the waterfront. While the interior of the fortress is not always open for comprehensive public tours, its imposing exterior and strategic placement provide a powerful reminder of the region's rich imperial history. It remains a popular spot for photography, history enthusiasts, and those looking to experience the more tranquil, historic atmosphere of the Asian shore.
