El Cerro del Aripo is the highest point in Trinidad and Tobago, rising to an elevation of 940 meters (3,084 feet) above sea level within the rugged Northern Range. It is situated in the Aripo Massif, a mountain chain that dominates the northern skyline of Trinidad and provides a natural barrier against the Atlantic. The peak is globally renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, hosting numerous endemic plant and animal species that thrive exclusively in the cool, moisture-rich montane cloud forests near the summit. Within the lower reaches of the mountain lie the famous Aripo Caves, notable for housing one of the world's most significant populations of the rare oilbird, a unique nocturnal fruit-eating bird. Due to its challenging terrain, steep slopes, and dense tropical vegetation, reaching the actual summit is a demanding trek typically undertaken by seasoned hikers and dedicated scientists. The mountain plays a critical role in the island's hydrology, acting as a massive natural catchment area for several key rivers that supply freshwater to the country's population.
