Fort King George
Fort King George is the best-preserved colonial fortification on the island of Tobago, standing majestically on a hill overlooking the town of Scarborough. It was built by the British between 1777 and 1779 and underwent several name changes and occupations during the recurring conflicts between Britain and France. The site features robust stone walls, a powder magazine, officers' quarters, and the original prison building. From its ramparts, visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views of Rockly Bay and the surrounding coastline. Today, the fort houses the Tobago Museum, which displays an extensive collection of Amerindian artifacts and colonial-era exhibits. Carefully restored cannons are still positioned along the walls, facing the sea as a reminder of Tobago's strategic military importance in the 18th century. The expansive grounds are adorned with manicured gardens and historic structures that provide deep insights into Caribbean military history. It remains one of the island's most significant cultural landmarks and a primary destination for heritage tourism.
