Ha'amonga 'a Maui (Tonga)

Weather…

Ha'amonga 'a Maui, often referred to as the 'Stonehenge of the Pacific', is a massive coral limestone trilithon located in the eastern part of Tongatapu Island. This impressive monument was erected in the 13th century under the reign of the 11th Tu'i Tonga, Tu'itatui. It consists of two massive vertical posts and a horizontal lintel stone, each weighing several tons and precisely joined using mortise-and-tenon connections. The name translates to 'The Burden of Maui', hinting at the legend that the demigod Maui brought the stones from Wallis Island. However, scientific investigations have confirmed that the stones originated from local coastal quarries. In addition to its function as a royal gateway, the structure likely served astronomical purposes, as notches in the lintel align with the summer and winter solstices. Today, the area is a protected national park and one of the most photographed landmarks in the Kingdom of Tonga. It embodies the technical brilliance and political stability of the ancient Tongan Empire.
