Railay is a world-class destination that combines dramatic geography with a tranquil, car-free environment. Cut off from the mainland by high limestone peaks, it is only reachable by sea. The peninsula consists of four main areas: West Railay for swimming, East Railay for nightlife and boat arrivals, Phra Nang for its iconic beach and cave, and Ton Sai for budget climbers. Rock climbing is the main draw, with hundreds of bolted routes ranging from beginner to expert level. For those who prefer hiking, a steep scramble leads to a panoramic viewpoint and a hidden inner lagoon. The Phra Nang Cave, adorned with wooden phallic symbols left by local fishermen for fertility, is one of the most unique shrines in Thailand. Despite its small size, Railay has everything from luxury resorts to rustic bamboo bars. Walking paths connect the various beaches, winding under overhanging cliffs and through lush vegetation. The best time to visit is between November and April when the sea is calm enough for the longtail boat transfers. Evenings are magical as the day-trippers leave and the peninsula falls into a quiet, starry rhythm.
