Tunduru is located in the southernmost part of Tanzania within the Ruvuma Region, situated directly on the border with Mozambique. The town is primarily recognized as the epicenter of Tanzania's gemstone trade, following the discovery of rich deposits of sapphires, rubies, and chrysoberyl in nearby riverbeds during the 1990s. Geographically, Tunduru is surrounded by dense Miombo woodlands and the southern reaches of the Selous Game Reserve, making it an ecologically diverse region. The town serves as a major agricultural market where tobacco and cashew nuts are the leading commercial crops. Due to its remote location, the area's infrastructure was historically underdeveloped, though recent road projects are successfully linking it to the coastal regions. Culturally, the district is influenced by Islamic traditions and the customs of the Yao people. Tunduru also functions as the administrative headquarters for one of the largest geographical districts in the country.
