Songea is the administrative capital of the Ruvuma Region, situated in the southern highlands of Tanzania near the border with Mozambique. The city is named after Chief Songea Luwafu, a prominent leader of the Ngoni people who played a decisive role in the Maji Maji Rebellion (1905-1907) against German colonial rule. The Maji Maji Memorial Museum in the city center stands as a testament to this historical struggle and serves as a major cultural landmark. Located at an elevation of about 1,000 meters, Songea enjoys a moderate climate that is highly conducive to agriculture. It serves as the primary commercial hub for the region's production of tobacco, coffee, and maize. The local population is predominantly composed of the Ngoni and Yao ethnic groups, whose ancestors migrated from Southern Africa in the 19th century. In recent years, Songea has seen significant growth due to its strategic position along the Mtwara Corridor, which links the southern interior to the coast. The city is also a vital educational center, hosting several colleges and university campuses that serve the southern zone of Tanzania.
