Barberyn Lighthouse

Barberyn Lighthouse is a stunning historical beacon situated on a picturesque island just off the coast of Beruwala in southwestern Sri Lanka. Completed by the British in 1889, this impressive 34-meter-tall white conical tower has guided sailors and ships safely along the Indian Ocean coast for over a century. The island itself is an idyllic tropical haven, covered in lush green palm trees that beautifully contrast with the stark white architecture of the lighthouse and the deep blue of the surrounding sea.

To reach the lighthouse, visitors must take a short, scenic boat ride from the mainland at Beruwala. The journey itself is an adventure, offering wonderful views of the coastline and the island as you approach. Once on Barberyn Island, you can explore the pristine grounds around the lighthouse. The complex includes the old lightkeeper's quarters and well-maintained pathways that reflect its colonial past, providing a glimpse into the maritime history of Sri Lanka.

Although climbing to the very top of the lighthouse is generally restricted and requires special permission from the Sri Lankan Ports Authority, the surrounding island offers a peaceful retreat.
