Marid Castle (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Marid Castle in Dumat al-Jandal is one of the oldest and most formidable fortresses in Saudi Arabia, with foundations dating back to the 1st century AD. Perched on a hill 600 meters above sea level, the castle overlooks the historic center of the Al-Jawf region. Its oval-shaped structure is built from massive stone blocks and features four prominent circular towers that have been restored during various historical eras. A famous legend states that Queen Zenobia of Palmyra attempted to seize the fort but failed due to its sturdy walls, leading her to remark on the building's indomitable strength. For centuries, the castle controlled strategic trade routes connecting the Levant with the Arabian Peninsula. Inside the walls, there are deep wells, secret passages, and residential quarters that showcase the engineering prowess of its ancient builders. Today, Marid Castle is a national monument and, together with the adjacent Omar Mosque, forms a unique architectural ensemble of great historical significance.
