Morne Fortune, meaning Hill of Good Luck, sits as a strategic sentinel overlooking the capital city of Castries. Its history is deeply intertwined with the colonial struggles between the British and the French, who fought over its heights no less than a dozen times during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the area has transitioned from a site of military conflict to a beacon of education, serving as the campus for the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. Visitors can still explore the well-preserved ruins of the old fortifications, including powder magazines and barracks. The official residence of the Governor General, Government House, is also located here, adding a sense of official grandeur to the site. From the summit, one is treated to spectacular panoramic views of the harbor, the northern coastline, and on clear days, even the distant island of Martinique, making it for history buffs and photographers alike.
