Roșiori de Vede is a historic municipality in southern Romania, located in Teleorman County. It holds the distinction of being one of the country's oldest documented towns, with its first written mention dating back to 1385. Strategically positioned along the Vedea River, the town flourished during the medieval era as a vital customs post and trade hub on the 'Salt Road' connecting the Danube to the interior of Wallachia. The name 'Roșiori' refers to the red-clad cavalrymen of the Romanian army who were historically stationed in the area. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the town developed a refined urban character, with Neoclassical and Eclectic buildings gracing its central boulevards. As a major railway junction, Roșiori de Vede played a key role in the industrialization of the southern plains. The city is also a center for education and culture, featuring a municipal museum with significant archaeological collections from the Roman and medieval periods. Today, it remains a pillar of the Teleorman region, blending its deep historical roots with a modern focus on commerce, agriculture, and transport, offering a quiet yet historically rich atmosphere for its residents and visitors alike.
