Golia Monastery (Romania)

Weather…

Golia Monastery in Iași is a 17th-century fortified complex, standing as one of Moldavia's most significant religious and historical landmarks. The current church was commissioned by Prince Vasile Lupu between 1650 and 1653, replacing an older 16th-century structure founded by the logothete Ioan Golia. Its architecture is distinctive for the region, blending local Moldavian traditions with significant Renaissance and Baroque influences introduced by Italian craftsmen. The monastery is enclosed by massive defensive walls and corner bastions, with the 30-meter high Golia Tower serving as a prominent city landmark and popular viewpoint. Inside, the church features valuable frescoes and the tombs of several historical figures, including Prince Constantin Mavrocordat. Today, the complex also functions as a cultural center and houses a museum dedicated to the writer Ion Creangă, who served as a deacon at this monastery.
