Blacksmiths' Bastion

Blacksmiths' Bastion

The Blacksmiths' Bastion (Bastionul Fierarilor) is a significant piece of medieval military architecture located in Brașov, Romania. Originally built in the 15th century, it was an integral part of the extensive defensive fortifications erected to protect the prosperous Saxon city of Kronstadt (Brașov) from invasions. As its name suggests, it was historically manned and maintained by the local blacksmiths' guild, one of the wealthiest and most important guilds in the city.

The bastion features a distinct pentagonal shape and was originally equipped with embrasures for cannons and firearms to defend the western edge of the city walls. Following severe damage from the Great Fire of Brașov in 1689, it was rebuilt but eventually lost its defensive purpose as military tactics evolved over the centuries.

In the 1920s, the structure was repurposed to house the Brașov State Archives, which it still holds today, safeguarding centuries of historical documents. While the interior is generally closed to the public due to its archival function, the exterior remains a striking landmark. Visitors strolling along the scenic After the Walls (După Ziduri) alley can admire the bastion's robust architecture and its harmonious integration into the picturesque medieval cityscape.
