Balabac
Balabac is considered the 'last frontier' of the Philippines and is a destination for true adventurers. This archipelago at the far southern tip of Palawan features landscapes often compared to the Maldives: brilliant turquoise water, endless sandbars, and incredible biodiversity. Highlights include Onuk Island with its stilt houses and Candaraman Island, famous for its giant starfish. A unique feature is the beaches with a subtle pinkish tint. Nature here is raw and pristine. In addition to the underwater world, Balabac is home to the rare Philippine mouse-deer (pillandok), found only here. Travelers should note that infrastructure is extremely basic, accommodation is often in tents or simple huts, and there is almost no mobile signal. Furthermore, caution is advised regarding saltwater crocodiles in some coastal areas. Meals usually consist of simple rice dishes and fresh fish. Access is arduous and time-consuming, usually via multi-day expeditions starting from Rio Tuba or Puerto Princesa. The best time to visit is strictly limited to the summer months (March to May) when the sea is calm enough for long boat crossings. Those who endure the hardships will be rewarded with a solitude and beauty that is unparalleled in the world.
